A 3-Step Skincare Routine That Works in Humid India and Dry US Winters — view 1

Skincare does not need ten steps. Most people get excellent results from three: cleanse, treat and moisturise, with sunscreen every morning. What changes is how you adapt those steps to your climate.

This routine is designed for readers in very different weather: humid Mumbai and Chennai, dry Delhi winters, and cold, heated US homes.

Step 1: Cleanse

A gentle cleanser removes sweat, oil, sunscreen and pollution without stripping the skin. Wash with lukewarm water morning and evening.

  • Humid weather: a gentle gel or light foaming cleanser feels fresh.
  • Dry weather: a creamy, non-foaming cleanser with ceramides keeps skin comfortable.

Step 2: Treat

This is where a serum targets a specific concern.

  • Oiliness, visible pores or marks: a niacinamide serum.
  • Dullness: a vitamin C serum in the morning.
  • Dehydration: a hyaluronic acid serum.

Start with one serum. Add another only after a few weeks, once you know how your skin reacts.

Step 3: Moisturise

Every skin type needs moisture.

  • Humid weather: a light, oil-free water gel is often enough.
  • Dry weather: apply the gel to damp skin, then add a richer cream on top, especially at night.

Every morning: sunscreen

Finish your morning routine with a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher. UV is strong across most of India all year, and it matters in US winters too, especially with snow reflecting light. Reapply if you are outdoors for long periods.

Adjusting for the Indian monsoon

High humidity means sweat and oil sit on the skin longer.

  • Rinse your face after getting caught in the rain or sweating heavily.
  • Keep layers light.
  • Exfoliate gently once or twice a week if you are prone to clogged pores.

Adjusting for a dry US or North Indian winter

Cold air outside and heating inside pull moisture from the skin.

  • Switch to a creamy cleanser.
  • Apply products to damp skin.
  • Add a richer moisturiser or a few drops of facial oil at night.
  • Use a humidifier in your bedroom if you can.

Don't forget your body

The skin on your body needs care too. A body oil or lotion applied after a shower, while skin is still damp, keeps it soft. Body oils are also popular for helping the look of stretch marks and scars over time.

A weekly check-in

Once a week, notice how your skin feels. Tight and flaky means you need more moisture or a gentler cleanser. Shiny and congested means lighter layers. Adjust one thing at a time.

Your routine at a glance

  • Morning: cleanse, serum, moisturiser, sunscreen.
  • Evening: cleanse, serum, moisturiser.
  • Seasonal swaps: lighter products in humid weather, richer ones in dry weather.

Consistency is the secret. Three steps done every day beat ten steps done occasionally.

VelvetComfort exists for these moments — the in-between times when you choose softness on purpose. Each piece in our curation is chosen with one filter: would we gift this to our most beloved friend?

Common questions

Do I need a different routine for different seasons?+

Keep the same three steps but adjust textures: lighter gels in humid weather, creamier cleansers and richer moisturisers in dry weather.

Is sunscreen needed in winter?+

Yes. UV rays reach your skin year-round, and snow can reflect them.
